LITTLEBOROUGH FARMS

The hills surrounding Littleborough are covered with farm buildings, many abandoned and largely demolished, perhaps even more comverted into residential properties and some still operating as farms. Some of those lived in may now be used as bases for horse riding or chicken rearing.

A review of Census data between 1841 and 1911 showed many of the farms above Clough and Calderbrook (see map opposite) were relatively small and that farming was not necessarily the main occupation with working in the cotton and woollen mills as well as coal mining being other trades. By 1841 hand-loom weaving was in decline but one resident carried on shoe making for many years.
